Your Personal Titanic Moment

8 Aug 2023

In a recent interview discussing the Titan sub catastrophe, James Cameron, the director of the movie Titanic, drew parallels between this tragedy and the 1912 Titanic disaster. The captain of the 1912 RMS Titanic ignored warnings about ice and sailed full speed into danger, resulting in the loss of over 1,500 lives. Similarly, the captain of the sub Titan and CEO of OceanGate, Stockton Rush, ignored safety concerns and proceeded recklessly, leading to fatalities. This blatant negligence finds a troubling echo in the realm of IT security and compliance for small businesses.

Such willful negligence is not uncommon in the business world, and it can have disastrous consequences. Some business owners exhibit willful ignorance, lacking awareness of the risks and relying on inadequate advice. Others, aware of the dangers, choose to be willfully stupid, believing they are exempt from potential harm or trusting unverified system. The most severe form of willful negligence is determined negligence, where individuals stubbornly ignore facts, evidence, and safety protocols despite knowing the risks.

The tragic events involving the sub highlight the dangerous behaviors Rush allowed, including inadequate testing, unsafe hatches, lack of emergency systems, and an egotistical mindset. While everyone makes mistakes and has moments of misplaced trust, it is crucial not to persist in ignorance or recklessness, as it can lead to personal and collateral harm.

Businesses holding sensitive data have a particular responsibility to prioritize cyber protection. Willful negligence in this area can harm not only the company but also its clients and employees. As business leaders, it is essential to acknowledge risks, seek expertise, and implement robust security measures to prevent potential disasters.

Remember, your actions and choices can determine whether you navigate safely or encounter your own personal Titanic-sized wreck. Neglecting cybersecurity can have far-reaching consequences, and it's vital to take proactive steps to protect everyone involved.
