Your AI Intern Just Started. Who Is Supervising It?

The proposal looked great. 

It was polished, professional, and exactly the kind of document that makes a business look like it had everything under control. 

Then the client called. 

The market research cited in section two, the statistics that anchored the entire recommendation, did not exist. The AI had invented them. Not vaguely. Not accidentally. Confidently, in detail, and without hesitation. 

There is a name for this behaviour. It is called an AI hallucination, and it happens when a powerful tool is given responsibility without supervision. 

Sound familiar? 

The Intern Nobody Onboarded 

Imagine hiring an intern and, on day one, giving them access to everything. 

Client files. 
Email drafts. 

Financial summaries. 
Internal documents. 

Then, saying, “Just figure it out. Let me know if you need anything.” 

No onboarding. 

No guardrails. 
No check in. 

That is how many businesses are adopting AI tools right now. 

Not because they are careless. In fact, it is usually the opposite. AI tools are genuinely useful, easy to access, and already built into the software your team uses every day. There is an AI button in your email, another in your documents, and another in your project management tools. 

It feels like help has arrived. 

And in many ways, it has. 

AI is excellent at drafting content, summarising information, organising ideas, and speeding up work that used to take hours. The problem is not the technology. The problem is how it is being introduced and used. 

Every application now seems to include AI. Not every business has stopped to think about what happens when someone clicks that button. 

What an Unsupervised AI Is Really Doing 

When AI tools appear without a plan, three predictable risks tend to follow. 

1. Sensitive Data Gets Shared Without Meaning To 

Staff paste client contracts into free AI tools to get a quick summary. 
They drop financial figures into a chatbot to format a report. 
They copy internal emails to improve the wording. 

Research shows that many employees are sharing confidential business data with AI platforms without approval, often without realising the risk. 

Many consumer grade AI tools use this input to train or improve their systems. That means your business data may not stay as private as you expect. 

No one is trying to break the rules. Most people simply do not know where the boundaries are. 

2. Shadow AI Starts Creeping In 

A growing number of employees are using AI tools their organisation has not been approved. 

From an IT perspective, that means: 

  • No visibility into which tools are being used 

  • No clarity on what data those tools can access 

  • No certainty around data ownership or privacy terms 

It is essentially shadow IT, just wearing a more helpful looking badge. 

3. Output Gets Trusted Without Being Checked 

AI sounds confident. Very confident. 

It does not flag uncertainty. It does not pause to say it might be wrong. It presents information cleanly and convincingly whether it is accurate or not. 

That proposal with the invented statistics looked just as credible as one built on real data. A human intern might make that mistake once. AI can repeat it at scale. 

That is not a flaw. It is how the tool works. 

The risk appears when no one reviews the output before it goes out the door. 

AI does not fix broken processes. It accelerates them. 

How to Supervise Your AI Properly 

The answer is not to ban AI. That is unrealistic and puts you behind businesses that are learning how to use it well. 

The answer is to treat AI like any new hire with a lot of potential and no context. 

Set Clear Boundaries 

Decide which AI tools are approved and which are not. Keep it simple. A shared list is enough. 

This is not about red tape. It is about knowing which tools are connected to your business systems and IT environment. 

Add a Review Step 

AI drafts. Humans approve. 

Nothing should go to a client, supplier, or the public without someone reading it first. It sounds obvious, but it is exactly where things usually slip. 

Be Clear About What Stays Out 

Client names. 
Contracts. 
Financial data. 
Employee information. 

If it is sensitive, it does not belong in a consumer AI tool. If people do not know where the line is, they will cross it unintentionally. 

The goal is not perfect AI use. The goal is a team that knows how to use AI without creating unnecessary security risk. 

A Simple Question Worth Asking 

Maybe your business already has this covered. Maybe you have approved tools, clear guidance, and a review process in place. 

But if your team is using AI the way many teams are, enthusiastically, independently, and without much structure, it is worth asking one simple question.
